Lagos State government has appraised the roles teachers play in the mental and collective development of students, saying they assist in developing aptitudes necessary to understand ecological issues.
Permanent Secretary, Office of Environmental Services, Dr. Gaji Omobolaji Tajudeen, who stated this at the 2023 Symposium for Environmental Bees Club (EBC) handlers held at Ikeja, explained that teachers also help in developing creative, effective and efficient environmental protection and management responsibilities.
Represented by the Director, Environmental Education Unit, Mrs. Monsurat Banire, Tajudeen further explained that the EBC handlers were committed teachers in public and private schools that coordinate the activities of Bees Club members, as well as inculcate attitudinal change in students on issues pertaining to the environment. He disclosed that the handlers were guided by the harmonized EBC manual, put together to engage students during the co-curricular activities on environmental issues every Wednesday in Lagos schools.
This year’s symposium was a platform for handlers to exchange ideas and get information about issues relating to the environment, as teachers are kept abreast of recent developments in the environmental sector, with the aim of cascading this knowledge to environmental Bees Club members. Tajudeen said that the yearly symposium was one of the commitments of the present administration to ensure environmental sustainability in schools, using bottom-up approach. He noted: “I appreciate EBC handlers for your exemplary leadership, commitment and excellent support as you all have played a pivotal role in catching the EBC members young and motivating them to be environmentally literate.”
Assistant Director, Environmental Education Unit, Mrs. Omolara Brown, in her welcome address, said through their activities, the handlers had empowered and enlightened the students on sustainable greener initiatives and various economic gains.
