Owerri, the bustling capital city of Imo State is geared up for a major development. The state governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma, has concluded plans to construct a new Central Market for the residents of the metropolis after the popular Ekeonunwa Market was demolished by a previous administration. The groundbreaking ceremony for this ambitious project was consummated on Friday, 21 June 2024. The event was spearheaded by His Excellency, Governor Hope Uzodinma, who was also the Chief Host.

The decision to establish a new Central Market in Owerri came in the wake of the city’s growing population and the need for modernized infrastructure to accommodate the increasing demands of the local economy. With the construction of the new Central Market in Owerri, the government became committed to creating a modern commercial hub that would meet the needs of both traders and customers equally. According to the stakeholders, the project is designed to provide state-of-the-art facilities, ample parking spaces, and a well-organized layout to enhance overall shopping experience.

Governor Hope Uzodinma, is well known for his commitment to infrastructural development and economic growth. The groundbreaking ceremony on 21 June marked the beginning of this transformative venture. Once completed, the new Central Market is expected to stimulate trade and commerce, create employment opportunities, and contribute to the overall development of Owerri. It will provide a modern and convenient shopping destination for residents and visitors to the state, offering a wide range of products and services.

The State Commissioner for Trade, Commerce and Investment,  Hon. Chika Benson Abazu, expressed his excitement about the project, commenting categorically that all necessary preparations had been meticulously put in place to ensure its success. The Commissioner emphasized the fact that the product launch was a very significant event for the state to showcase its commitment to trade, commerce, and investment.

In his remarks at the event, Imo State Commissioner for Trade,  Commerce, and Investment. Barr. Rex Anunobi said: “Today, Imo state is recording another milestone. A multi-faceted project which is targeted to not only launch new products and services, but to also decongest the old Douglas Road Market and provide commerce and trading activities that will draw down investment opportunities to the 32 or more teeming residential layouts in Owerri and beyond. This new market project represents a fresh canvas, waiting for the brush strokes of creativity and entrepreneurship. It is an opportunity for us also as Imo citizens to redefine commerce and investment, challenge conventional thinking, and craft a new narrative of identifying un-met needs by unlocking possibilities and bridging the gap between innovation and impact.

“I wish to reiterate that pioneering this new market will help unlock new revenue streams for the state, foster innovation and progress, create new jobs and vast opportunities, and most importantly, improve lives and transform communities.
We at the Ministry of Trade, Commerce and Investment wish to use this auspicious occasion to appreciate and thank our transformational Governor His Excellency, Most Distinguish Senator Hope Uzodinma, CON, GSSRS, for making this project a reality as part of his Shared Prosperity programme. Let me also use this opportunity to appreciate His Excellency Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, the former President of Nigeria, the Special Guest of Honour for his support towards this project.  Assuring Imo people, Governor Uzodinma  said: “The people and government of Imo State will rise up to our responsibility and do our side of the bargain. This Market will renew the image of Imo State in the global map.”
